Uncharted Destinations in a Jamaican-American Life
A warm and reflective memoir of roots, resilience, faith, education, migration, public service, and the enduring responsibility to help others rise.
About the Book
Lift As You Climb is a Jamaican-American memoir about roots, mentorship, migration, leadership, and legacy. Vanley Bucknor reflects on the moments that shaped his life: growing up in Jamaica, training first as an educator, arriving in the United States with little more than hope, building a career in information technology and federal service, and discovering that the deepest purpose of success is not status, but service.
The memoir moves through childhood, education, migration, professional growth, public service, family, mentorship, and legacy. It is both personal and universal — a thoughtful account of becoming and of the responsibility to help others rise.
“Success is not only about how far we climb. It is also about who we help along the way.”
Five Reflections
The memoir and the September 9 virtual launch are connected through five reflections that trace the journey from formation to responsibility and, finally, to what remains.

Reflection Two
No One Climbs Alone

Reflection Three
Leaving Is Only the Beginning
The work of beginning again while carrying memory, identity, responsibility, and home across borders.
Reflection Four
Service Made Visible
Leadership as stewardship, truth, accountability, capacity-building, and responsibility for others.
Reflection Five
What Remains
What outlives position: influence, example, memory, and the responsibility to lift someone else.
